I have just introduced the Daily 5 and café into my year 4 classroom 2 weeks ago! Thus far, my students are loving it with students asking each day, when are we doing the daily 5? Each term we have a positive reward system in place. This term we do banking: each student receives a bank book (an exercise cut into 3 and ruled up to mimic a bankbook) and they receive a ‘gold’ coin for reading well, helping someone etc etc. This also has a flow on effect for maths… they make a 'deposit 'and calculate their balance each day. At the end of each day I tell my class the price of gold for the day so they can make their deposits… prices vary from 50 cents, $1, $10, $100, even $10 000! They are always sooo excited about how much ‘money’ they have. To tie with CAFE, I am opening a ‘çafe’ each week where students spend their money. Last week we had a café that sold chocolate, this week an internet café, and so on. The students are also loving this idea. Anyhow… thought I would share this idea…
