I just watched a video on Word Work on the sisters site and I was reminded that you use words from the class word wall or your personal words. This means you create set words (eg. with alphabet beads) and/or write set words.

Is it also about using materials to create sentences and word families? I have seen some examples of great word work activities but they are more about creating sentences and word families? Is this work also appropriate for word work even though it doesn’t pertain to using word banks?

I would say that doing work families and word sorts are perfect activities for kids at those stages. Just remember, that different kids will need different words for those activities.
As far as making sentences–do you mean like using words from word wall/collectors to form sentences? If so, I think that would be appropriate, as well. It you mean just forming sentences from experiences, then that would seem to fit more into the Writing block.
