How do you set up Daily 5 rotations? Have you found it to be more effective if students choose a station(s) each day or do you assign a station to each group? Also, are you meeting with students during this time? If so, how do you ensure each student is able to participate in each of the Daily 5 components?
There is a whole process of introducing each of the Daily 5 components, which allows students to build independence in each before being introducing to the next. If you have the Daily 5 book, you can read through the sections to get that understanding.
However, if you don’t have the book, never fear! Right here on the website you can find out all that information. If you go to the home page, you will see the Daily 5 tab. If you click there, you will a list on the right side of the page listing the 5 choices. They are listed in the order you would mostly likely introduce them–certainly Read to Self and Work on Writing would be the first two.
When you click on Read to Self, for example, you’ll see links to the Launching Charts and Quick Start Guides. Read through those, and you’ll get a feeling for how that will go. Also notice on the right side of this page are the lessons you’ll need to teach before releasing the students to try this out independently.
I suggest you go through all the pieces about Read to Self, asking questions here as you go, to get your head wrapped around the structure. If you take the time to do that, you’ll see that the launching and quick starts for the other areas will closely follow that structure.
During Daily 5 rounds is when you will be able to confer with your students. Since you will most likely have 2-3 rounds each day, the students will have an opportunity to participate in these areas.
It sounds like you are just beginning your Daily 5 journey, and we’re here to help you through that. Don’t hesitate to ask any question you may have. If you don’t have the book, I would suggest that you consider it. It’s a great reference, and one you’ll find yourself going back to often. Also, use the website to your advantage by not only reading the articles, but also viewing the related videos.
