Children who have met, and even exceeded grade-level expectations still deserve to continue receiving excellent instruction. When we have students who are high achievers, we help them choose books with a greater level of text complexity and work with them on both comprehension and vocabulary.
Even as adult readers, we are constantly working to expand our vocabularies, and comprehension is a life long goal. Instruction often occurs through individual conferences instead of small groups. The focus of instruction typically revolves around deeper comprehension strategies and expanding vocabulary strategies like using prior knowledge and context to confirm meaning as well as using word parts to determine meaning.
Many teachers worry that students shouldn't have the same goal all year. However, for those advanced readers who don't need accuracy or fluency work, keeping their focus on comprehension and vocabulary is completely appropriate.
