In the second edition of The Daily 5 and in this article, we were able to articulate why students don't do all five tasks each day. Here is a photo of a slide from our workshops that visually lays out what we think of when we are differentiating tasks for our students.
As a bonus of how this might look in your class, watch this video of Shannon Campbell, a fifth-grade teacher. She asks her students, "Do you want to Read to Yourself, Read to Someone, or Listen to Reading?" This is a very simple and poignant way to show that students will self-select the Daily 5 task that is most helpful to them.
