Richard Allington always pushes our thinking.  He is passionate about what matters for readers and the effect teachers can have on them. We had the privilege of hearing him speak at the International Reading Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas, in April, 2014.  He summed up decades of research that told us what needs to happen during our literacy block to accelerate reading growth and reader motivation.

This research shows that every day, every child needs to

    • read something they have selected;
    • read accurately;
    • read something they understand;
    • talk to peers about their reading and writing;
    • write something that is meaningful; and
    • listen to a fluent adult read aloud;

    So simple, so clear, and so true.  We are thinking about how to incorporate this research into our literacy block for all of our students.

    When we are collecting and analyzing our assessment notes this fall, we plan to focus on these ideas.

      • Are we talking with our students and noting their text choice?
      • Are we talking to our students about how their work is meaningful to them?
      • Are we assessing our students' level of purposeful talk?

      These ideas can be applied to any curriculum and are reflected in the Common Core State Standards.

      The Daily 5 is the perfect structure to help every child experience these essentials of literacy every day, and the CAFE system of assessment and instruction can help teachers collect, organize, and analyze this data.
