Illustrations help readers gain meaning from text and confirm that the words being read make sense. Illustrations often provide hints that help students decode a word. Using the pictures also prepares students to improve accuracy by cross-checking.  Illustrations in the form of charts, graphs, photos, and captions will support readers throughout their lives.
