I Went Walking is the story of a little boy and the colorful farm animals he encounters while taking a walk. Simple, patterned text, and picture clues make it a great book for emergent readers.

Possible strategy instruction:

  • C: Listen with understanding.
  • C: Predict what will happen; use text to confirm.
  • A: Recognize when two words rhyme.
  • A: Produce rhyming words.
  • F: Recognize sight words.
  • E: Know where to begin reading.
  • E: Word-by-word matching.
