We all know relationships matter. And, in the classroom, they’re everything. According to John Hattie’s Visible Learning research, teacher-student relationships have an effect size of 0.72.* That’s a big deal. It tells us that building strong relationships isn’t just “nice” or “optional”—it’s one of the most powerful things we can do to impact learning. And the best part? It doesn’t require a fancy curriculum or expensive materials. It starts with how we show up, listen, and connect.
When we talk about relationships, we’re not just referring to that beginning-of-the-year name game or learning about students’ favorite snacks (though those are fun!). We’re talking about deep, authentic connections that create a true sense of belonging. The kind of classroom where students feel seen, heard, and valued—not just as learners, but as people. This kind of connection builds enjoyment, trust, confidence, happiness, and a sense of safety, all of which are foundational for learning to thrive.
And it’s not just teacher-student relationships. It’s also about the relationships students build with one another. Do they feel like part of a team? Do they trust and respect their classmates? Do they celebrate each other’s wins and navigate challenges together? Those connections matter just as much. So do the relationships we form with families. When caregivers feel welcomed and respected, they become powerful partners in the learning journey.
So, let’s keep talking about relationships. Not just in August, but all year long. Because when we prioritize connection, we create classrooms where students are more engaged, more motivated, and more willing to take academic risks. And when that happens? Everyone wins.
