Lasting Influence

Sometimes we are gifted with glimpses of our lasting influence.

Celebrations—Joan has been busy this spring attending the high-school graduations of her former students from kindergarten through second grade. Being invited to students' recitals, sporting events, and weddings shows the depth of relationships that can be built in 180 days.

Thanks—Kim McClung, a high school teacher, found the following on her Facebook page:

Teacher appreciation day was yesterday, so I'm a little late. But I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all you do. You were the best teacher I ever had. You were the one teacher I had in high school who made me feel like I could do anything and achieve anything. I will ALWAYS remember your encouraging words as I continue to work towards my career. You always believe in your students and see the best in them. Your job is not easy, but you give a million percent every single day with love! What you give to your students is one of the best gifts they can receive in life. You're appreciated Mrs. McClung! Don't forget that.

Remembrances—My father is a retired elementary principal. He was beloved and respected and is still recognized and greeted affectionately around his hometown. He got a phone call last month from a gentleman who wanted Dad to know that his sister had passed away. She had been in Dad’s school 45 years ago!  When dad attended the memorial service, he was even more surprised to see his name in the program. He, along with three teachers, were recognized for their influence and inspiration and lauded as the reason Debra dedicated her life to teaching.

Wow!

Perhaps you haven’t experienced something like this yet. Be encouraged. We may not be graced with acknowledgments like these, but when we pour ourselves into our students, our lasting influence, which may remain invisible to us, will be visible to the world.
