Readers need to be continuously aware of whether or not what they are reading makes sense. They need to hone a keen awareness so that when and if meaning breaks down, they will stop and employ strategies to fix it.

In this video, Joan is conferring with Jada, a fourth grader. Joan models what it looks like to stop when a text is confusing and try a few things to clarify and deepen comprehension.  She has Jada practice alongside her, and then sends her off to continue using this important comprehension strategy.
