Reading good-fit books is absolutely essential if students are to progress as readers. Children must spend the majority of their independent reading time engaged in books they are interested in and that they can decode and comprehend at high levels. This leads to increased engagement and in turn creates a motivated reader.

How do we get perfectly matched books into the hands of our students? And, how do we ensure student ownership for finding that perfect book? We empower them to select their own good-fit book using the I-PICK method. We teach I PICK the first days of school and review this method of choosing books frequently throughout the year. One way we help students remember is by giving them an I-PICK bookmark to use as a visual reminder of the necessary steps in selecting a good-fit book. We believe you will find this bookmark useful as well.
