I attended a training this week where we discussed many successful strategies to use when teaching vocabulary. One of the main strategies discussed was using three kinds of roots: suffix, base, and prefix. During the training, the presenters mentioned the CAFE strategy: Use Word Parts to Determine the Meaning of Words. As I looked at this strategy more closely I found it to be a hard strategy to relay to parents but one that is very valuable to successful readers.
