Choosing a partner is a very sophisticated strategy. We used to just say, "Pick a partner and get to work." Moments later we'd be wondering why our students were not being successful. Arguments had ensued, there were races for certain children, someone was inevitably left out and we'd be bombarded to hear cases, make judgments and restore peace. Though we were tempted to discontinue the use of partners, we believed in the importance of partner reading, so we persisted in finding a way to make the procedure successful.
