All too often when we call on one student to answer a question, we hear other students respond to their answer with, “That’s what I was going to say!” Our students want us to know when they know an answer. If we are having a whole-class lesson, the only way they know how to communicate this to us is by saying, “That’s what I was going to say!” or “I knew that!”

Karen Shannon put a stop to these statements during a whole-group lesson with one simple motion—a hand placed quietly on top of the head. Watch in this video as she explains this signal to her students.
