Each year, we work to build a learning environment grounded in trust and respect. Relationships are key to our success in building and sustaining this environment throughout the year.

The very first thing to do in building relationships is to learn students’ names and pronunciations, quickly. Calling students by their desired name, in the correct pronunciation, is the first way they will know they are important to you. Be intentional in taking the time to learn each child’s name as quickly as possible, and provide opportunities for them to learn each other's names, too. This is the first step to building a classroom community.

We suggest using the attached form, or one of your own, to make notes on each child’s name and how they pronounce it. What will help you remember it best?

For example:

  • Gail Boushey - Gail Boo-shay
  • Allison Behne - Allison Bay-knee

As you write this down, practice saying it aloud to the child and have the class practice as well. Repeating this a few times in the first few days will help you and your class get comfortable knowing and saying each other’s names. And, its respectful!
