The second component of the PATH menu is — Apply and Solve: Work Through the Problem.

Just as it is important for students to make sense of a problem and to have an entry point to begin (the first component of the PATH menu), it is also important that they are able to apply what they already know about mathematics in order to work through the problem. The guiding question students can ask themselves is, what strategy/strategies can I use to solve the problem? Using the strategies under Apply ad Solve, students are able to use what they already know to help them as they navigate through a given problem. Additionally, they can reflect on their work and make adjustments as necessary.

Using the Standards for Mathematical practice, we identified eight strategies in the second component of the PATH Math Menu. These strategies can be taught at any grade level and can be used across a broad range of mathematical concepts.

As we roll out this menu, we will be releasing the videos as well as the Ready Reference Guides that will support you with how to teach these strategies to your students.

It is our hope that this PATH Menu will be a tool that supports you as you work to help all students become better at math.
