You may be new to the CAFE Menu or just need a bit of support with where to begin. We begin our strategy instruction with this rule of thumb in mind: 6-5-4-3. Before introducing a new strategy, it is helpful to understand these strategies and the supports available. There are many resources available on the Interactive CAFE Menu. Below, you will find the first six comprehension strategies. Take time to read about each strategy and view some of our go-to resources when first introducing them to students.

The first six comprehension strategies include:

Check for understanding

Back up and reread

Use prior knowledge to connect with text

Predict what will happen; use text to confirm

Infer and support with evidence

Make a picture or mental image
