If you are having a hard time keeping focus lessons brief, you'll want to watch Rachel and her fifth graders in action.

This lesson focuses on the comprehension strategy of Determining Importance in Nonfiction and takes only eight and a half minutes. She begins by asking the students to look for the big idea the author is wanting the reader to understand. To align with the Common Core and make the lesson even stronger, she adds, "What do you think the author is wanting the reader to understand, and what is your evidence from the text that supports your thinking?"
