Check for Understanding is a comprehension strategy that teaches readers to stop frequently and check, or monitor, whether they understand what they are reading. We find it can help to give readers a physical check mark made out of cardboard or laminated construction paper. They can hold it as a reminder that they have a job to do while they are reading: They need to check for understanding. The printable checkmarks below serve as a template in creating checkmarks for your class.
