Calming Stress With Healthy Foods

Carol Moehrle

During stressful times I often turn to my happy foods. We all have those foods that we think calm us and make us happy. Mine are pasta of any kind, and chocolate brownies! I crave these comfort foods, but they don’t contain the nutrients I need to help balance the stress. Comfort food is fine occasionally, but on a regular basis, we should be eating healthier foods.

What we eat can impact our stress levels, so if you are under stress consider your diet as part of your stress management tools.

Add foods that have healthy nutrients to help calm the stressful times:

Fresh fruits: Oranges, Pineapple, Berries, help increase your natural vitamin C level.

Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, Walnuts, Brazil nuts and Pumpkin seeds help boost your magnesium levels and help promote quality of sleep.

Fish: Salmon, Tuna and Trout which are high in omega-3 fatty acids help promote overall brain health and are known to help with anxiety and depression.

A balanced diet is an important strategy to add to your arsenal of tools to help combat stress.

Balance your comfort foods with healthy food choices during stressful times.
