It is important to teach students to monitor their own reading rate. Through repeated practice students can learn to self-monitor and adjust reading rates as needed. Learning about different reading rates and becoming aware of the purpose of using different rates is essential to improved fluency and comprehension.

Although we are there to provide direction through focus lessons, small group instruction, and individual conferences, extra support from home is important too. Use this Pipeline as a guide for parents to assist their child in adjusting his/her reading rate to match the purpose for reading.
