Beth Lawson and her second-grade students are tuning in to interesting words. There are words on sticky notes in the front of the room that they watch for while reading independently. Beth brings out a ball and asks students to raise their hands if they found one of the words. When they catch the ball, they share the word and throw the ball back to Beth. This simple activity helps motivate students to look for interesting vocabulary words and encourages them to begin using them in their speaking. It can easily be tweaked and refined to meet the needs of the students in your room.
