Bloom Where You're Planted
—Mary Engelbreit

I have been fortunate to be part of a peer mentoring program for the past year.  As I worked with this group of amazing women, it was clear to me that I was learning as much from them as they ideally were learning from me.

As our year together began, my primary role was that of speaker and coach. As the year progressed, it gently shifted to conversation facilitator, and participants began to speak up and share their lives with one another.

I had many opportunities to listen as these women shared their thoughts and ideas on leadership, equity, strategic planning, community engagement, and much more. They inspired me again and again by taking advantage of opportunities that came their way.

It can be unnerving to be thrown into a new role or job situation. What I learned from these women was that they usually had the strengths and skills to succeed. If confidence was lacking, finding a mentor to work with provided the time needed to stretch and grow.

Any time we choose to stretch ourselves, personally and/or professionally, we set ourselves up for tremendous benefits. Some of the best benefits I witnessed in this group were:

  • personal growth
  • better focus on a vision
  • increased confidence
  • thoughtful decision making and
  • new friendships

Keep your eye out for opportunities to grow and stretch, and bloom where you are planted.
