We hear, shockingly, of teachers who are actually told not to spend time reading aloud, or those who don't value the time as worthy during the day. Of course we have all encountered many parents who don't understand how important reading aloud to their child actually is for their literacy development.

This article and piece of research, conducted by Dominic Massaro, a professor emeritus in psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, provides the compelling proof of the power of reading aloud to children. The article points out the variety of literacy enhancements reading aloud to children provides such as stretching their vocabulary and grammar at an early age. He also found that when we read aloud to children, it prepares them to be expert language users, even indirectly facilitating their learning to read.

So for those of you who tell us you need solid information on why reading aloud to children is a vital role for parents and teachers alike, this is a wonderful article to add to your library.
