The Sisters had suggested using words from the students’ writing as their Word Work words. How do you “test” to see if the student knows the words then? How do you know when to switch to new words?

I would say, “Go back to their writing–their journals”. Seeing that they spell the words correctly in daily writing assures that they have the word. On the other hand, kids can often spell a word for a “test”, but then forget them.
