National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Many fields, including education, have standards of excellent practice created by members of the profession themselves. National Board Certification is a voluntary professional development activity whereby a teacher can demonstrate these standards of excellence. Teachers who wish to pursue National Board Certification provide evidence of their knowledge and competency by engaging in a rigorous process. To achieve National Board Certification, eligible teachers have to pass a computerized test in their subject area, submit portfolio entries along with accompanying video clips, written analyses, and student work samples. As delineated by the National Board Standards, their work must show proof of accomplished teaching (“National Board Standards”).

A committee of teachers, representative of professionals in their respective fields, developed these National Board Standards, which are based on Five Core Propositions. Although there are 25 certificate areas that span 16 content areas, the Five Core Propositions provide the basis for all certificates (“A New Milestone). National Board Certified Teachers, regardless of their area of specialization or grade level, embody the ideals described in the propositions (“The Five Core Propositions”).

Educators contemplating National Board Certification, teachers who have already achieved this status, and those interested in learning more about how Daily 5 relates to the Five Core Propositions, can be assured that the two share many of the same characteristics. Strong parallels can be drawn from the foundational principles that guide Daily Five to the Five Core Propositions.  Here is a detailed look at how the Daily 5 framework relates to each of the Five Core Propositions.
