When a student is being disruptive I continue with my conferring as usual and then move to work with this student. When I sit next to them I will take this time to have a "social conference" with them. In our room this consists of recognizing a problem together and then brainstorming ideas for a solution.

The most important part of this conference is that the student must take part in the brainstorming and must choose their behavior goal. I write this information in my conferring notebook, just as I would our regular conferring meeting. This keeps the plan in my notes, where I can refer to them daily. I am reminded when I open up my conferring notebook to look for evidence of this student working towards their goal and can praise them for their effort.
