In between each round of Daily 5, we do a whole group focus lesson based off of the CAFE Menu. At least one of these lessons (if not more) evolves around the use of a picture book or big book. This is one way we use shared text within Daily 5.

Shared Reading is not limited to Daily 5 time, however. Our goal, based on the research of Richard Allington, is to read aloud 2-4 picture books each day to students of all ages. To reach this goal, we utilize the power of shared reading during Writer's Workshop, Science, Social Studies, etc. We often share a book after recess or just before the school day ends. No matter what grade we teach, we share a chapter book for 10-20 minutes after lunch.
