Whether doing student-led conferences or traditional parent-teacher conferences, the CAFE Menu is an integral part of our literacy conversations with families. We use our conferring notebook or online conferring notebook to share each child’s strengths and goals, which are based on individual conferences and assessments.
In a student-led conference, the child shows where they have placed their name on the CAFE Menu bulletin board and tells how this connects to their individual CAFE page in the conferring notebook.
Before the conference ends, we spend a moment or two modeling how to support their child’s goals at home. We make a copy of the specific Parent Pipeline aligned to their child’s goal(s) and have a CAFE Menu ready to send home so they can post it on their refrigerator. We remind them that classroom newsletters will highlight strategies we are working on so they can provide ongoing support at home.
