"But we haven't had Daily 5 yet!"

Such were the moans of first graders if their work was interrupted by a school event during our Daily 5 sessions. There were expressions of "But I didn't get to do Read to Self yet." or "Now I won't get to do Work on Writing. That's not fair." Those interruptions happen more often than many of us would like. Events like picture day, fund-raiser kickoffs, musical programs, assemblies, and so on, provide us with some fragmented days.

When those interruptions occur, we can often pacify the group by letting them know we will do a round of Daily 5 as soon as we get back to our classroom.

Here are a two of other ways we handle Daily 5 interruptions:

  • When we are going somewhere that will involve a lot of wait time (such as standing in picture-day lines), we have the students take their fluency boxes or a baggie of books along for some Read to Self time.
  • Students bring a baggie of books for Read to Self or Read to Someone on field trip bus rides. The bus driver lets us keep the books on the bus while we tour the zoo, aquarium, or other place, and students enjoy another round of reading on the bus ride home.

We'd love to hear how you deal with Daily 5 interruptions. Head over to the discussion board to share or get a few tips from colleagues.
