The Interactive CAFE Menu might be my favorite page on our entire website. Upon opening it, you’ll gain access to an invaluable resource that includes everything needed to teach students key reading strategies.

Look under the CAFE headings for a specific strategy your students need. Click on the link and you’ll be led to a variety of resources to help you teach it.

First, you’ll find four printable resources:

  • Ready Reference Guide: These one-page documents serve as a guideline for teaching the strategy. They include the definition, purpose, secret to success, how to teach it, and troubleshooting tips.
  • Assessment: Find Common Core alignment, possible text selections, assessment options, and rubrics to use in whole-group and small-group settings, and with individuals.
  • Parent Pipeline: These supplemental documents help families understand a child’s specific goal and strategy so they can easily support the work at home.
  • “I Can” Bookmark: Copy, cut, and pass these out, and students will easily be able to remember the specifics for success.

Then check out the tabs for these resources:

  • Videos and articles related to the strategy.
  • Lit Lessons: Picture books are a masterful vehicle for teaching strategies. Lit Lessons provide detailed ideas and options for intentional instruction.
  • Book Looks: Briefer in nature than the Lit Lessons, these give a short synopsis of the book and a few possible strengths for strategy instruction.
  • Brief Focus Lessons: Designed from the instructional protocol, these lessons take on a purposeful and explicit tone, last about 7–10 minutes, and maximize student potential for engagement and retention.

If you use the CCPensieve, you’ll find the same menu at the top right of your screen (to the left of Logout/My Account). This is especially helpful if you need a quick, in-the-moment review of something when you are working with a student.
