Lillianna chose Work on Writing during this round of Daily 5, so Joan confers with her on her writing goals.  Because Joan acts as a guide on the side, keeping busy with her conferring notebook,  Lillianna is encouraged to continue her independence instead of relying on the teacher for unnecessary support.

You may be encouraged by the background chatter you hear in Joan's classroom. Daily 5 in Kindergarten is never a silent activity, however, if you can hear those background conversations, you'll notice they are on-task conversations.
