As Maxwell reads his story, Joan leads him to discover what is missing, rather than spell the words for him. Students have a personal dictionary page in the back of their journals for words they use frequently that may be difficult and aren't on the word wall.

Since Maxwell is consistently underlining and writing more, Joan determines that he is ready for a new goal, which they'll tackle next time they meet; adding periods.
