Children begin to internalize spelling patterns and the correct spelling of high-frequency words when they can manipulate letters, touching and moving them into the correct order. Michael Grinder refers to this as developing muscle memory. The materials we use for Word Work are conducive to this manipulation of letters.

We used to think we had to change these materials often to keep student interest high. We found that the materials were viewed more as toys than as tools when we did that, so now we introduce the Word Work tools the students will be using and stick with them throughout the year.

We refer to heart words in this video. We borrowed the term for from Nellie Edge and it refers to words we want students to know how to spell by heart. Heart words are also known as high-frequency words.

We have also included the download for the Write and Stamp page we use. Students write their heart words and then use stamps to stamp them out.
