The strategies we post on the CAFE menu in our classroom are the strategies we teach to the whole class. These strategies become part of our learning community. We have common background knowledge of the stories and lessons that were used to illustrate their use.

The strategies we teach in small group or one on one are not added to the whole class menu, but are highlighted on each student's personal CAFE Menu in our conferring notebook. In each child's section in our notebook we have a conferring sheet for both reading and writing as well as a CAFE Menu. Older students may have their own CAFE Menu in a notebook. In this case they also highlight the strategy that they are working on in their personal menu. This up-close and personal look at strategies specific to each of our students allows for the individual teaching and learning.
