The Daily 5 is simply a way to structure the literacy block so that students develop a lifetime love of literacy as they work on authentic reading and writing activities.  It places a great deal of emphasis on trust, choice, independence, and stamina.  Based on need and interest, students participate in the following:

  • Read to Self
  • Work on Writing
  • Word Work
  • Read to Someone and
  • Listen to Reading

The Daily 5 does not hold any content, so teachers are free to use district-required resources and favorite materials to support instruction within the structure.  Because of students' high level of engagement and independence, teachers are provided with extended periods of time to provide focused instruction to small groups and one on one, ensuring that all students meet standard in reading and writing.  It incorporates two to four daily opportunities for whole-group literacy instruction.

CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. Strategies used by powerful readers have been identified in each category and are used to provide timely differentiated instruction for every student in our care.  CAFE is a system of goal setting based on assessments and one-on-one conferring sessions, as well as a system for providing focused, intentional, differentiated instruction and a method for easily monitoring progress.  CAFE provides the content to the Daily 5 structure, and helps ensure that our students will meet Common Core State Standards.
