There are about 300 words that we encounter most frequently in our reading and writing. Many of these words have unusual spellings that do not conform to phonetic rules. These words are often a focus of studied practice in early grades to build fluency.  We eventually need to know most of the words we see by sight, and this comes only by seeing them over and over in our reading.  Having high automaticity is necessary for accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
