Recognizing literary elements is a strategy that is a foundational to comprehension. Teaching students to recognize and understand the character, setting, plot, and theme of a text is essential to their understanding of the story. This strategy is an easy strategy for parents to use when checking their child's comprehension.

There are two stages of instruction with this strategy. The first stage being very basic and the second stage being more involved. Once our students master the basic literary elements we can move them on to the more thought provoking elements that will provide a deeper understanding. Therefore this strategy is split into two Pipelines, a Part 1 and a Part 2. Part 1 includes basic literary elements, and Part 2 will dive more in depth to take their learning further.
