There are usually one or two students in every classroom who have difficulty following directions and building stamina. We refer to these behaviors as barometer behaviors because they tend to dictate the weather in the room. When barometer behaviors are present, they quickly transform the learning climate from mild and sunny to blustery.

Before we let these difficult behaviors negatively influence how we feel about children, it may help to think about the classroom experience from their perspective. We have a powerful opportunity to help them be successful and to make a difference in their lives. If a child who finds it hard to build stamina were to write an open letter to us, it might sound something like this. It is a reminder of all the small things we do that provide support and help our children thrive.
