This small group lesson guides children in utilizing various writing strategies. After thinking of an idea, they tap the words out with their fingers. They write heart words from memory or by checking the word wall for support. They say the word, stretching out the sounds to segment them so they can record what they hear. Finally, they are constantly reminded to reread to see if their writing makes sense. Joan sends them off to practice independently and will check on their progress the next time they meet as a group as well as when she confers with them one-on-one.
