Even if students have had multiple years of experience with Daily 5 and CAFE, launching looks very similar each fall. We run into trouble when we assume students will retain their learning and the behaviors of independence after a lengthy vacation. In addition, even teachers who loop up with a class will inevitably have one or two students who are new to the school. Therefore, when starting out with Daily 5, we go through the 10 Steps to Independence and create the I-charts, just as always.

Teachers with experienced students will probably notice that the I-charts are created pretty quickly, the 10 Steps to Independence are moved through fluidly, and stamina is built in larger increments. However, we always take each group as they are, building stamina in increments with which each member can be successful.
