This Is the Dream is a beautifully illustrated book that tells the story of the civil rights movement in verse.  It clearly shares the struggle of the 1960s and the effect of these changes on American culture. Because it is written in verse, it is a quick read, but the pictures and text combine to make a powerful retelling of this important time in history.

Possible strategy instruction:

  • C: Use prior knowledge to connect with text.
  • C: Ask questions throughout the reading process.
  • C: Compare and contrast within and between text.
  • A: Look for word parts.
  • F: Use punctuation to enhance phrasing and prosody (end marks, commas, etc.).
  • E: Use pictures, illustrations, diagrams.
  • E: Use prior knowledge and context to predict and confirm meaning.
