When we first began developing Daily 5, the order we typically introduced each of the Daily 5 choices was: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading and lastly Word Work.

As we've continued to work with children, we've refined our thinking and practice. Now, to help impart the notion that reading and writing are both of utmost importance, we introduce Read to Self, followed by Work on Writing. Once those are up and running, we introduce choice, allowing students to decide if they'd like to read first or write first.

Following those two core components, the rest is up to you. What do your students need most to help them reach their goals? Take your direction from your students strengths and needs.
