When determining goals for our students we first think to ourselves "What are they good at, Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency or Vocabulary?" Then we follow up with "What are one or two things I could teach and reinforce in the next three weeks that will help move this child forward in their reading" We know that strategies do not stand alone. It is the layering and learning what strategies work through focused one-one-conferences that guides our continued choices and work. Because of this, students frequently have two goals.  For example if we were teaching a child how to Check for understanding, we may have to layer on the strategy of Back up and reread. This gives the child a comprehension goal and an accuracy goal.
