This sixth-grade class has 29 students, but since there aren't class size limits at this school, that number could easily increase to 32 or more. Unfortunately, the size of the room doesn't expand with each new student. Since we know that students must read voraciously in order to be strong readers and in order for children to read for extended periods of time they need to be comfortable and successful.  Therefore we address the class size and layout issue up front, concluding as a group that selecting a successful spot is key to growth.

Gail and Joan guide the discussion with questions, and you'll notice that students don't raise their hands to be called on. They've learned how to respond when no one else is talking. This is an interesting video in light of growing class sizes.
