In our classrooms, there are a limited number of spots available during Daily 5 rounds for Read to Someone, Word Work, and Listen to Reading.

Choices of Word Work and Listen to Reading are limited because we don’t have enough materials for all students to participate at the same time.

Read to Someone is limited to help minimize distractions for students not participating. We tend to set the number at six, but many teachers are comfortable with eight per round. Once you’ve decided on your limit, you’ll need a system for keeping track so as students check in with their Daily 5 choice, they’ll know when this option is closed for the round.

Here are a few helpful ways to count and inform the class that Read to Someone is full.

  • Have a student hold up a finger to represent each student who checks in with Read to Someone. They announce when this option is full for the round.
     
  • The teacher can hold up a finger to represent each student or monitor the check-in sheet as students say their choice, informing them when Read to Someone is full.
     
  • Have six to eight check marks ready to pass out (or three or four if partnerships will be sharing). When students choose Read to Someone, they are handed a check mark as a reminder to Check for Understanding. Once the check marks are gone, Read to Someone is full for that round.
     
  • When a student checks in with Read to Someone, they stand up.  The class can easily see when the maximum number is reached and Read to Someone is full for that round. Students who are standing can easily see who is available as they choose a partner
