Daily 5 works because we teach expected behaviors using the 10 Steps to Teaching and Learning Independence. Positive behaviors are built into muscle memory and become part of a daily routine, supporting a productive literacy block. Occasionally (when holidays approach or after a brief vacation) children need to revisit and practice the expected behaviors. This can be done by reviewing the I-charts and keeping track of stamina for a few days in a row. Necessary foundation lessons can be revisited between stamina-building sessions.

Another idea that creates enthusiasm with students is Daily 5 Boot Camp. A letter is sent to parents informing them of the week boot camp will take place. Children are encouraged to wear any type of camo during that week. Then, we review and practice one of the five Daily 5 tasks each day of boot camp. 

MondayRead to Self The I-chart is reviewed and expectations are modeled the incorrect way and the correct way. Children build stamina incrementally, with a check-in of behaviors and the graphing of stamina between each practice. Since this works merely as a review of Daily 5, students should build stamina quickly (5 minutes first round, 10 minutes second round, and so on). During day one of boot camp, children are not working on the other Daily 5 tasks, only Read to Self. Possible foundation lessons to review are Three Ways to Read a Book and I-PICK Good-Fit Books.

TuesdayWork on Writing The I-chart is reviewed and expectations are modeled the incorrect way and the correct way. Just as they did on Monday with Read to Self, children build stamina incrementally with a check-in of behaviors and the graphing of stamina between each practice. During day two of boot camp, children are not working on the other Daily 5 tasks, only Work on Writing. Possible foundation lessons to review are Underline Words You Don’t Know How to Spell, and Choose What to Write About.

WednesdayRead to Someone The I-chart is reviewed and expectations are modeled the incorrect way and the correct way. Similar to Monday and Tuesday, children build stamina incrementally with a check-in of behaviors and the graphing of stamina between each practice. During day three of boot camp, children are not working on the other Daily 5 tasks, only Read to Someone. Possible foundation lessons to review are Voice Level, EEKK (elbow, elbow, knee, knee), How to Get Started, How to Choose a Partner, and Check for Understanding.

ThursdayWord Work The I-chart is reviewed and expectations are modeled the incorrect way and the correct way. Unlike the first three days, a lack of supplies means that not all children will build stamina in Word Work at the same time. Instead, choice will also be reviewed and children will choose between all options. Students will have shorter practice sessions so everyone will have a chance to practice Word Work. Continue with a check-in of behaviors and the graphing of stamina between each practice. Possible foundation lessons to review are Set Up and Clean Up Materials, Choosing a Successful Spot, and Choosing Materials to Use.

FridayListen to Reading The I-chart is reviewed and expectations are modeled the incorrect way and the correct way. Similar to Word Work review a lack of supplies means not all children will build stamina in Listen to Reading at the same time. Instead, choice is again reviewed and children choose between all options. Students will have shorter practice sessions so everyone will have a chance to practice Listen to Reading. Continue with a check-in of behaviors and the graphing of stamina between each practice. Possible foundation lessons to review are Set Up the Technology, Listen and Follow Along, and Manage Fair and Equitable Use with a Limited Number of Devices.

The entire boot camp lasts only five days, but the effect lasts much longer.
