Tip of the Week June 18, 2010

Looking Back Before Looking Ahead - The Survey

We had the joy of presenting one of our workshops in beautiful San Antonio, Texas last week. One of the highlights of all the traveling we do is talking with teachers and hearing about their experiences with Daily 5 and Café.

There was one particularly delightful group of new teachers in San Antonio. We were struck by their enthusiasm, sophisticated thinking and, of course, their lack of wrinkles! They were especially interested in hearing about management gems and the lesson pitfalls associated with Daily 5 and Café. It reminded us how much we love and value the growth received and energy derived from good collegial relationships. We know you may be interested in hearing from others who are on this literacy journey with you.

Therefore, we invite you to take the short survey below. It gives you a chance to weigh in on Daily 5 and Café in your classrooms -- What success did you enjoy that you hope to continue next year? What are some refinements you'll make? Spending some reflection time now, while the past year is still fresh, might help with formulating ideas for next year. Interested in a little extra bonus? If we use the content of your reflection in a Tip of the Week, you will receive a free year subscription (new or renewal) to The Daily Café! Can't wait to hear from you!

FAQ

Q: What is The Transitional CAFE Menu and where do I find it?

A: Do you have any "in between" students? The original CAFE menu is a bit too advanced for them, but the emergent menu isn't quite right either. "Tweeners" have many of the skills from the emergent menu already in place, yet, they aren't ready to dive in to the original.

What's the answer? A transitional menu to the rescue! To read more follow the link below.

Starting the Year with Self Portraits (Website)

We love the fresh start of a new school year. While launching Daily 5 and CAFE are a priority, we are also deeply interested in building a sense of community in those early weeks. One of the first art projects we do with our students, whether they are Kindergartners or 6th graders, is create self-portraits.

Parent Pipeline - Use Pictures, Illustrations, and Diagrams (Download)

The strategy of using pictures, illustrations, and diagrams to gain meaning of text is a commonly used strategy. Readers use picture clues to determine if what they read makes sense, or to help them make sense of something they are struggling to understand. Often pictures will tell us who is in the story, where it takes place, and what is happening.
