CAFE - What is The Transitional CAFE Menu and where do I find it?

Printer-Friendly Format

By Trish Prentice

Do you have any "in between" students? The original CAFE menu is a bit too advanced for them, but the emergent menu isn't quite right either. "Tweeners" have many of the skills from the emergent menu already in place, yet, they aren't ready to dive in to the original.

What's the answer? A transitional menu to the rescue! After looking closely at the CAFÉ Menu, I selected strategies I felt my students could grasp. The next step was to shorten the descriptions into easy to remember phrases, while keeping the meaning intact. Some strategies were separated into smaller portions. This allowed us to focus on one specific skill at a time.

I used the transitional menu this year with amazing results. I was continually surprised and pleased with how students demonstrated their understanding of each strategy. So, if you teach early primary grades, consider customizing the CAFÉ menu to be a "good fit" for your particular students. You will be thrilled with the outcome!
